Revolver
So here’s the song—hope you dig it!
This one’s maybe a little less “about” anything than my usual stuff, but the initial inspiration came from my life as a little kid. My parents would put me to bed at 9, and then every night I’d stay up ’til about midnight, listening to KFRC (at the time, an AM Gold hit radio station out of San Francisco) in the dark.
The songs I heard then occupy a permanent place in the reptilian sub-basement of my identity and still have the power today to put me into an instant fugue state when I hear them in passing.
This applies especially to Heart’s “Magic Man”, which I found terrifying at age six and still actually raises the hair on my neck when I hear it.
Here are some other hits of the day that will always turn me into a first-grader when I hear them:
- Steve Miller Band: Rock’n Me
- Fleetwood Mac: Say You Love Me
- Paul Simon: 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover
- Chicago: If You Leave Me Now
Not the hippest list, I guess, but then I wasn’t yet drawing an allowance to buy my own records, and in fact didn’t even have all of my teeth.
I’m curious as to whether other people have these primordial song relationships. Are there songs from your past that still turn you into a little kid? Leave a comment below—would love to hear.
Thx so much for listening ~ Mike
Glad to hear you ☺️ Many thanks for the song and this memories
WTF..?? Yer back.. Hey! nice tune, a cool G trip with a good bit of Lenny Kravitz groove, I jammed with it on a classical nylon affair..excellent production, what’s your gear?
Nice to have you back
Thanks!
So awfully glad to finally hear from you again! Still holding out hope for a second LP
I dig the song! it’s excitingly chaotic, especially at the start, where all these bongos, electric drums and guitars clash and bump into each other. yes, there is certainly something first-grade-ish about it – like when you see a synthesizer for the first time and you just wanna use all the sounds that it has no matter the cost
Great to hear from you too, Andrei! Yes I too hold out hope for a 2nd LP. Thinking about possible track listings this morning…
Wow, Mike! Glad to hear this!
Love the vibe!!
Have a great new year!
Thx Todd!
The instrumental track to Rod Stewart’s “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” still haunts me.
Ha ha – nice!
Right up there with the cover to Billy Joel’s “The Stranger.” That goddamn mask on the pillow
Right? Those empty eye sockets…
Dr. Donald D Rose would totally spin this.
I’d like to think so. He lived in my neighborhood! On Halloween, he was one of those houses that gave kids entire normal-sized candy bars. Hero.
Hey Mike,
Some of the guitar tracks on Revolver seem to be coming in from Outer Space somehow. Pretty cool. And if you thought Heart’s Magic Man was terrifying on late night KFRC, what about Barracuda live at the Concord Pavilion, circa 1979.
Yer Buddy, Dirty Dan the Sewer Man.
Wow – Heart live at the Pavilion?? What was the parking lot scene like at that show? 😉
There were usually parking lot parties at the Pavilion. Obviously, I don’t remember a lot.
The Boy is back in town? Word, player. Nice production value. I can see the teenagers swooning already.
Thx, D! Yes, swooning teenagers is the play here—that’s why I didn’t put my face anywhere in the artwork…;)
J. Geils Band sends me right back to early elementary. We listened to it over and over and over again on my best friend’s turntable, esp Centerfold and Freeze Frame. And of course the Beatles — even though it was the early 80s they were still the main soundtrack in our homes.
Yes – feel you on this! I remember going to a birthday party where the kid got 2 copies of the J.Geils album, and I spent the entire party trying to cajole him into giving me his extra copy. Can’t remember whether it worked, but I notice that I do have that album on vinyl, so…maybe?
