Under Strange Skies

Under Strange Skies is the latest EP from Radio Nowhere – four songs that run the gamut from dark, reflective tabla ballad to driving piano bounce to sociopathic bossa nova – you know, the usual.

Days Between Stations

Days Between Stations is the first EP from Radio Nowhere – four pop rock songs that reference everyone from Pete Townshend to Beck to Leonard Cohen to my 4th grade music teacher. Loud guitars, people singing, weird noises = okay!

Interstate Medicine

Interstate Medicine is Radio Nowhere’s debut release – nine tracks of alternative pop/rock music that roll out like a weekend roadtrip in your older brother’s Camaro. If you’re looking for the perfect soundtrack for a summer drive from San Francisco to Vegas, this album will get you there (at least as far as Turlock, anyway).

Slide

lyrics

i know a girl arrives by telephone
she speaks in dial tones
she’s always on the line
but she’ll break for a call from me
her bags are packes, says let’s get out of town
i think i’m coming down
she got a running tab at the onramp pharmacy
we hit the interstate, she’s passing valentines
she don’t understand, i’m just killing time
where the stars reside/i just vacation
in the space between this place and the flipside
we let everything slide/dream in constellations
our worlds never collide
roll down the window boy and let it idle slow
in case we have to go
gimme a head start we’ll get lost in the scenery
just let me run my rap, show a little skin
maybe check the map
and if you play it right i’ll let you be my accessory
the clock is winding down, it’s time for choosing sides
but do i fold this hand or just let it ride
where the stars reside/i just vacation
in the space between this place and the flipside
we let everything slide/dream in constellations
our worlds never collide
she’s waiting
singing someday my prince will come
she’s sliding up against me striking sparks
says if they ain’t gonna light boy just drink up
and help me raise a toast to the dark
where the stars reside/i just vacation
in the space between this place and the flipside
we let everything slide/dream in constellations
our worlds never collide

story

The almost-true story of two people who aren’t exactly in a relationship…it’s more that they’re the last two people left on a sinking ship. Chiming, crushing guitars join prominent Winwood-style B3 organ to create a Badfinger meets Bowie vibe.

Heathrow

lyrics

booked a flight to Heathrow/if it ever clears
i’m taking a chance on the weather
leave the runway/raise the gear
it’s taking a turn for the better
so turn your radio on/turn your radio loud
i’m coming over the air/then i’m going to ground
so c’mon give it a spin/hear me coming around
and i can’t keep my heart/from falling apart
so i’m leaving it behind right here with you
and i’ll be keeping my hands to myself like we planned
but every London lover thinks she’s an exception to the rule
did you get my postcard/wish you were here
it’s hard to tell your signal from the static
and i think your satellite/has left the atmosphere
tell Mission Control it’s time to panic
so turn your radio on/turn your radio loud
i’m coming over the air/then i’m going to ground
so c’mon give it a spin/hear me coming around
and i can’t keep my heart/from falling apart
so i’m leaving it behind right here with you
and i’ll be keeping my hands to myself if i can
but every London lover thinks she’s an exception to the rule
at the seat of the empire/where the sun never sets
i’m surrounded by redcoats/smoking French cigarettes
this flag that i’m flying/is drawing enemy fire
and i could use reinforcements
’cause i’ve caught them coming through your wires
and i can’t keep my heart/from falling apart
so i’m leaving it behind right here with you
and i’ll be keeping my hands to myself if i can
but every London lover thinks she’s an exception to the rule

story

If you were raised on the Beatles, Stones, Who, Zeppelin and the Clash, your first solo trip to London is a pretty momentous occasion. Throw in a fight with your girlfriend right before takeoff and you have the beginnings of a pretty good song brewing. This track uses big, chiming guitars, plenty of Rhodes electric piano, and a memorable, arcing melody to warn the girlfriend that you might not be coming back.

Beautiful Stranger

lyrics

ohhh, i have so much to say to the moon
summer is turning to fall a season too soon
and i, i feel so lonely and i don’t know why
i just want to see my reflection in somebody’s eyes
and i can’t stay another day/where do i come from
where do i go/down every road
looking for my beautiful stranger
and i travel around/my feet never touching the ground
i can’t forget that i’m living in the lost and found
and oh, we’ll never know
if she harvested just what she sowed
what was she holding on to when she had to let go
and i can’t stay another day/where do i come from
where do i go/down every road
looking for my/why am i always on the way
wonder who sent me/invented me/alone
nobody home
looking for my beautiful stranger
well who are you, and who am i and how and why
and oh, what have you done now to deserve that alibi
in all the fairy tales that i was raised up on
the princess always finds her face
and i just need a friend/a blood sister cutting me in
something thicker than this water flowing under my skin
and i can’t stay another day/where do i come from
where do i go/down every road
looking for my/why am i always on the way
wonder who sent me/invented me/alone
nobody home
looking for my beautiful stranger

story

Quiet, autumnal feel with a subtle undercurrent of sadness. It’s actually a love song for an adopted girl who has never met her real parents. Lots of Wurlitzer electric piano and vocal harmony, a little like a subdued Supertramp song.

Deathwish Debbie

lyrics

Deathwish Debbie and her demerol
she’s got a prescription
says she’s gonna take ’em all
crush on the cowboy at the pharmacy
she needs a little something/anyone can see
that she’s sick sick sick tonight
gonna make it alright
but you better make it quick tonight
gonna make it alright
Deathwish Debbie and her darvocet
says she’s gonna kill herself/but she hasn’t yet
everybody’s telling her to just hang on
but she fell down the stairs again
i think that something’s wrong
he’s so slick slick slick it’s not right
not right
she’ll never make it stick stick stick tonight
gonna make it alright
Deathwish Debbie and her dolophine
it’s a present from her daddy
he’s trying to keep her clean
but she’s already working on a remedy
and she can’t kick on friday/there’s nothing on tv
it’s a cheap cheap trick, this life
gonna make it alright
it just keeps going tick tick tick you can’t fight it
yeah

story

Deathwish Debbie was inspired by a late night show at the Paradise in San Francisco by the late, great Deathray. They specialized in a tense, palm-muted electro-pop chug, like the Cars on Red Bull. I basically swiped the feel from them, added a little more guitar feedback and the story of a girl who tries a little too hard to run with the wild crowd. Special thanks to my med student roommate who provided me with the names of appropriate pharmaceuticals that started with “D”.

Alabama

lyrics

hey Alabama, you sing as good as you look?
anyone can drop a line, lessee if you can set the hook
hey Margarita, they’re counting down to last call
can i get you another, they tell me that you like ’em tall
oooh pistolera, sleepin’ with a thirty-ought
must be daddy’s little girl, you’re born with it, can’t be taught
i hear he took your mama, pay him back and keep the change
ain’t nobody bulletproof/he’s just always out of range
and everything that you say
may be used to stop you running away
can’t take losing you to the other side
i’m bringing you back alive
hey senorita, been waiting for you by the phone
somebody got your lawyer/i guess you heard that he ain’t home
heard you were stuck in Ensenada/runnin’ from a 5 to 10
now i’m just waiting on a visa
come and look for you again
and everything that you say
may be used to stop you running away
can’t take losing you to the other side
i’m bringing you back alive

story

Mid-tempo riff-rocker with loud guitars, sounds a little like the Beatles added harmonies to a lost Led Zeppelin track. The song is actually about singer Shelby Lynne, whose parents were gunned down in front of her.

Electric

lyrics

once we stood in summer under Arizona skies
halfway to the border/i kept a weather eye
she said once i saw a butterfly/glowing velvet rust
but when i took it in my hand/it crumbled into dust
while we walked i hadn’t noticed but we’d come upon the tracks
she came from down in Mexico and that freight train brought her back
tell me it’s not so
summer blooms don’t disappear beneath the winter snow
if we can feel electric once you know
it’ll be there when we touch again
that voltage never goes
then i was in Morocco on a cloudy Atlas night
the fire was spitting sparks/we traded tenderness for sight
she raised her head then i could hear that far-off whistle blow
she looked at me/already i could feel the undertow
said i don’t want to see you fading in another railroad car
someone told me once you can’t catch lightning in a jar
tell me it’s not so
summer blooms don’t disappear beneath the winter snow
if we can feel electric once you know
it’ll be there when we touch again
that voltage never goes
so i’m westbound on the coastal line
steaming towards the waves
will i be swept away again/will no one come to save me
i have been a whispered prayer/rolling down the years
and i have seen them turn away/laughter in my ears
why is my love wasted on so many rolling stones?
they have gathered nothing/and i am left alone
tell me it’s not so
summer blooms don’t disappear beneath the winter snow
if we can feel electric once you know
it’ll be there when we touch again
that voltage never goes
it’s been there all my life
it arcs through everything
i know

story

Electric is a song about waiting for someone to arrive, knowing that they’re already pulling away. The track features droning, drop-tuned acoustic guitar and keening, intertwined violin lines, creating a cinematic effect entirely in keeping with the singer’s evocations of iconic locations and deep, dark nights.

Caroline

lyrics

my girl/she’s got such bright blue eyes
and my girl/always brings me a surprise
she got such smooth and creamy
lies/so sweet/they’re good enough to eat
and she hands them out/when i show up for trick or treat
she always turns a trick or two to teach me that i
don’t know up from down in from out or left
a little to the right/she sighs when i give up without a fight
as she’s running my red lights/she whispers hold on tight
Caroline/where do i sign up for her grapevine
is there anybody there/i can never trace her line
and she won’t tell me her sign/i’ve got to make her mine
and i can tell/when she’s coming
mmm, i ain’t so dumb
there’s a way that the earth moves
when some chick so wicked this way comes
she brings her earthquake weather
my pets put paws upon their eyes
and every time she climbs onboard
i’m sure my ship is going to capsize
she’s a mutiny besides/i feel like Captain Bligh
Caroline/i swear i’m gonna leave that girl behind
you know it isn’t fair/that she commits the crime
and i wind up doing time/i’ve got to make her mine
and she slides/offsides/no flags/she’s wide
and suddenly i’m caught in her high tide
she’s a walking homicide/drive-by/superspy/in hi-fi
she’s a KGB undercover dragonfly
they call my flight/no strings/it’s a green light
full-time free-fall/and i say ooh yeah it’s alright
don’t you wait up for me to call
Caroline/ain’t scared of nothing/she’s so fucking fine
she won’t take me anywhere/’til it’s after my bedtime
and she says she’ll show me hers/if i show her my gold mine
Caroline

story

Sunny, upbeat song about the girl who’s a little too crazy for you…but you can’t get enough of anyway. Beatlesy vocal harmonies, chiming guitars and a little Steve Winwood-style B3 organ.
